“Solstice Cow”
Pencil, pastel, & watercolor
December 2023
I got very tired, about three days ago, of drawing/painting vaguely christmas-y, black horses in the snow. They all sold, which is, of course, nice.
At about the same time (last week?), I found myself being gently reprimanded (and subsequently deleted) for having been less than entirely mooney-eyed reverential about “Celtic” menhirs and dolmens in the moonlight. It seems that my comment would have interfered with some folks’ wish/need for everything to remain “contemplative and meditative”.
My immediate reaction was to think “Well, I’ll lay you twelve years of studying Gaelic and Old Irish (and extensive travels in Brittany, Wales, and Cornwall) against your Collected Hits of Loreena McKennitt some early WB Yeats poems, and your copy of Sybil Leek’s 1968 memoir”.,
I know……..my grandmother would tell me that it’s not nice to make fun of stupid, undereducated, or self-complacent people just because they ARE.
So?…..in fierce retaliation, I just painted/ drew this…..the most purely comic picture I’ve done in years. Cows don’t care. At a certain point, neither do I.
This one’s for all my pagan, witchy-woman friends (Surprisingly enough, I have a lot of them, collected over the years and all of them markedly intelligent, quite useful, and usually funny…no wonder they used to be persecuted).
Herewith…….here’s wishing everyone a happy solstice (which is in five days)……. P.S. When in doubt, put a dumbass cow into the picture. I used to know the guy who got famous by “inventing” the Ben&Jerry’s cow………
