I do get tired (or at least fairly exasperated/bored) by folks who regularly ask “How do you DO IT?”. The final fact is that, yes, portraits are generally preceded by “sketches”.
Just for the fun of it, so to speak, here’s a sheet of sketches done in preparation for a commissioned portrait that appeared about two weeks later.
I’ve never quite understood why folks are so interested in the “process” of painting a portrait. I’d just as soon ask if I could watch the messy delivery of a baby, rather than waiting to see the finished product once it’s cleaned and appropriately presented for public viewing.
